Wow!!!!What a night! Just got back from our first group meal. Everyone is really friendly and suprisingly young! Bangkok is so crazy. We've just walked down Khao San Road...All i could see were people selling everything under the sun. The street is totally lit up by countless neon signs inviting you to see such wonders as "the ping pong show," which is a woman who has clearly had to much time to herself, demonstrating her intimate relationships with ping pong balls and strings of plastic flowers.
Dogs of all shapes and sizes were scratting on shop floors and nibbling on every scrap of stray food available. We sat in this empty open restaurant with a clear view of the street and in earshot of Bob Marley. One of the highlights of the night was the continuous return of wooden frog woman who looked like an oriental pearly queen and kept coming back to our table in attempt to flog croaking wooden amphibians..er no thanks.
Now in bed...still feels so surreal..despite how amazed I am with Bangkok, it is quite clearly a very very poor city. Shopkeepers eyes light up if you even so glance at their wares. In the taxi on the way to the hostel, fisrt appearances seemed so glamourous with palm trees lining the road and huge billboards towering above us but on closer inspection I was quite shocked. Buildings flaking and big families living in small accomodations...i was shocked at the amount of poverty i'd seen within minutes of arriving.
getting sleepy now but we've lost Holly..so probs should find her before we go to bed.
