What a surreal day. today we were off to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge and so we got on the train from Heathcote to the harbour. we stepped off the train onto the platform and I was astounded. The harbour, the bridge and the opera house all in my field of vision. I couldn't believe I was seeing one of the most infamous scenes in the world. We were so far away from home. We couldn't have been further away if we tried and I guess I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride due to the fact that we'd all made it here by ourselves and did what we'd set out to do. Over the past month I feel like I've learned so much; being completely independent, respecting and experiencing others cultures and also seeing what it is like to be the minority for once... anyways...enough of being deep, I was just proud of ourselves.
So..we went ot climb the actual Sydney Harbour Bridge. We got our tickets and were shoved into a shoe box of a room with the other climbers. We were breathalised, made to fill in forms and given lockers (alright, chill out army people). We were given an ourfit to wear ( a grey babygrow that looked like I was in prison) and made to remove watches, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. We then had our heads shaved to make walking on the bridge easier. No that was a lie but it was like joining the army. I felt like I was in the Crystal maze too. Our tour guide came with a 100% official bald head and we were all following him in jumpsuits. All we were lacking now is shiny glass balls.
We were trained in how to use all our equipment and lined up to recieve our headsets and radios. it was all going swimmingly until one girl went up to get kitted up and just passed out. her head hit the floor and her eyes started flickering. Turns out she was a bit too hot and wasn't aware that she had passed out when she came round. She wasn't allowed on the bridge climb surprisingly after that. What a reassuring start. So.. we set off and climbed up the bottom of the bridge which looked like the industrial zone of the crystal maze (bet you've got the theme tune in your head now right...di du do da deeeer). So we had the zone but still no shiny balls. The view was just amazing. We were ridiculously high up and could see for miles and miles around. Holly was thirsty and suggested that there should be a bar for the people at the the halfway point...she realised it was a bad idea when I pointed out that people would get drunk and die alot. Just a tiny flaw.
